The e-SENS project has released the eIDAS/STORK plugin, an e-ID solution providing a smooth migration path from the infrastructure deployed during the STORK project towards compliance with eIDAS (The Regulation 910/2014 on electronic identification and trust services for electronic transactions in the internal market) and ensuring continuity and smooth transition of STORK services.
The eIDAS Regulation adopted on 23 July 2014 is a milestone to enable secure and seamless electronic interactions between businesses, citizens and public authorities. It obliges all Member States to become eIDAS compliant in 2018, thus enabling recognition of the notified e-ID means.
Significant investment in the infrastructure for electronic identities and authentication in the EU was made within the STORK and STORK 2.0 projects, completed in 2015. The STORK 2.0 infrastructure is still in use by nineteen countries and over 20 services are still online. In order to bridge the gap between eIDAS and STORK technology the eIDAS/STORK plug-in was developed by e-SENS.
The e-SENS project provides a conversion solution that will enable countries with STORK 2.0 infrastructure currently linked to e-ID services to connect to the eIDAS network. The solution consists of a regular eIDAS node and a plug-in component that is able to convert in both ways the authentication requests and responses between the eIDAS format and the STORK 2.0 format. The plug-in will also handle mappings of attributes between STORK 2.0 SAML and the eIDAS node SAML.
The development process of the eIDAS/STORK plug-in v.1.0 has been successfully finalized. The current version has already been rolled out in Iceland and Greece, whereas deployment in Spain and Sweden is expected before the end of 2016. Piloting of different services using this solution will take place in the first quarter of 2017.
The e-SENS project will be happy to assist more countries currently using STORK infrastructure to test and deploy the eIDAS/STORK plug-in.
